A Country Funeral (Nonet)

The steeple behind the hills respires.
Even the trees fly at half mast.
The birds pay no attention
to the people below.
A faint breeze is felt.
There is no shade.
We stand still,
heads bowed
down.

A Country Funeral (Madrigal)

This day is exteremly long.
The sun is setting by the hills.
Everyone says to stay strong.

At the wake, we have our fill:
Everything in place, nothing wrong.
Even winds won’t break the still.
To hold it in and yet look out,
while dead inside, replete with doubt.
