4 Horses Begin Again Vortex Sunrise
Jason Hancock
I always wanted to be an artist. The opportunity of creating with only the rules that I choose to work with and against, very early on, gave me such a sense of freedom that I wanted to cultivate throughout my life. Now, as I near 40, I have reached a level of understanding of what excites, surprises, and gives my mind and heart a healthy mode of expression.
In my work, a set-up of opposites in process and materials come together into a refined piece where chaos and order co-exist. Oil and water, geometric and organic, chance and thoughtful decision play off one another to bring about an image that reacts with and against itself. The idea that there is a continuous cycle of contributing factors throughout the growth of our lives that further contributes outwardly beyond infinitum is key to this work. There is lack of control, semblance of control, and the utter impossibilities that occur that throws all, again, out of joint.
The processes the paintings undergo inform the composition and open up the meanings of the pieces through the literal and figurative elements. Taking oil paint and pouring plaster on top sets up a condition where much is at chances’ determination with a subtle manipulation as I move the two materials around the surface. Then, I go in and add and accentuate this composition with hand painted elements: circles for vortexes, rounded rectangles for foot-prints, and lines for pathways. I allow the background and foreground to interplay as a continuation of the theme cyclically existence.
My art is my solace, therapy, and love that makes me feel whole when life itself can be so fractured. As these characteristics come together my hope is sharing something sublime.
