Friends make things better

By Frankie King Gartner

Frankie King Gartner is Director at a New England Preschool.  We asked her about  her ‘Preschool Quote of the Day’ she’d share from time to time on Facebook.

Frankie King Gartner:  "I have to write down the conversations as I'm hearing them. It was actually part of my teaching training- called running records, where you write down everything the kids say and do in real time. Amazing the results! Author Vivian Gussin Paley was a pro at this."

Friends make things better

On the playground, Jack was showing his friend Teddy his wiggly tooth. When Jack took his hand away he noticed blood on his fingers.

He was surprised and started to cry.

Teddy quickly said to him, "One time,
when I hurt my knee, and there was blood,
I went running to forget about it."
Teddy demonstrated by running around
the playground.

Jack was not convinced and still crying.

Teddy said, "Jack, you can be the
Captain of Digging, OK?"

Jack brightened up and said, "OK!"

They sat down and started digging in the sand. Jack said to Teddy, "After my tooth comes out, can I still be Captain of Digging?"

Teddy said, "Yes!"

Teddy has a big heart and Jack understood
that Teddy was trying to help.

Missing Mom

One of the boys was missing his mom.

He asked his teacher, through his tears,
"When will my mom be back?'

His teacher answered, "Soon."

He said, "But WHEN will she be back?"

She replied, "After we play outside."

He pleaded, "BUT WHEN?"

She was running out of ideas and said to him, "At 10:45."

He said, still crying, "What does THAT mean?"  His teacher replied, "It means soon."

He took a deep breath and said, "OK".

At snack today, we were talking about our moms.

Preschooler: Mrs. Gartner, do you have a mom?
Mrs. G.: Yes, I do.
Preschooler: I miss my mom.
Mrs. G.: So do I.
Preschooler: Hey! We have the same feeling!

How empathy develops in preschool!

Use Your Words!

To all of you who find preschoolers behaviors a mystery...

While on the playground, two preschoolers
were digging in the sand. One of them
suddenly threw sand at the other.

Z:  Why did you throw sand at me?!?!
W: Because I want to play with you.
-
My response was, "If you want to play
with Z., than ask her!  Use your words!"

My daily mantra at preschool!
