Hospital Sounds

Peril, strangely encountered, strangely endured - H.D.

    by Joyce Schmid

You lay asleep, connected everywhere
to things that beeped and pumped

and breathed and sighed. Alarms went off.
Footsteps clicked, phones rang,

and trolleys rattled by. You moaned.
Then suddenly, there was the sound of singing--

pure wide-open music—
huge bouquets of glowing reds

and blues and yellows edged in light.
I stepped out in the corridor and saw

a choir dressed in jeans and bright Hawaiian
flowers, singing in the room across from us.

The singing stopped. The sound of footsteps
faded through the hall. And that was all,

except your breathing evened
and your face was bright.
