Emily's Message

Last night in my dreams
Emily Dickinson appeared in white
and took me by the hand.
We drifted like cumulus clouds—
she, a Nightingale; and I, a feather—
fluffing through the bluest blue.
I knew what she was thinking
although she said no words aloud.
Her thoughts, the cooling wind
slapped some sense in cushioned cheeks
urged me to steer away from me,
the dream’s significance yet unknown.
Still, her presence left me ever mindful—
there is nothing more to life than charity
and death is less than what lies before us.
