The Nurse on the Bus Finalist
by Wilda Morris © 2017
I’ve forgotten most of my college classmates,
my professors, the content of erudite lectures,
where I sat in freshman algebra, the cooks
in the school cafeteria, the hum of traffic
on Nebraska Avenue, what year the dean resigned.
Then why do I remember a woman whose name
I never learned, the one in the white uniform
who saw me crying on a city bus, sat down
beside me and asked, What’s wrong?
Is there anything I can do to help?
