In Cambria,
this hostel makes us
want to drink.

*

Cactus-fat squirrel
squatting behind the agave—
I can still see you.

*

Juniper hand cream
under an arcade on Main Street—
No.

I don’t know why we walked
this crescent coast
on a knife’s edge.

*

Night by the ocean,
we take
the shape of our hunger.

*

The crow drops his soda-can tab,
stunned
by the sudden scent of rosemary.
